I don’t think I have the original so I scanned the shirt.  This is the design I did for our Delaware Friends of Folk FALL FLING back in 1997.  I do a shirt every year, wonder what I’ll come up with next?
This festival is still going on each year but it is now called the Delmarva Folk Festival.  http://delfolk.org/
We are having our 19th Folk Fest on October 1,2- less than 3 months away.  Save the date and come on out!
This design is fun for lots of reasons (to me, anyway!);
  • I wasn’t a professional graphic designer, yet, back then.
  • We had Norman Blake as the headliner.  The dude riding the chicken should bear a likeness.  I don’t know if he saw it.  That’s another story.  I was inspired by a book of larger than life, fantastic postcards from history- a kid was riding a chicken in the book.  Maybe something else from that book will inspire the 2010 shirt?!
  • All the art was done by hand, I probably printed ‘Fall Fling’ on my inkjet and pasted it up.  I had a Mac but no Adobe products back then.
  • I did know a gal named Delma that lived in Seaford, Delaware at the time.  I told her she got mentioned in my design, she wasn’t that impressed.  She was very nice about it, well, she was just nice anyhow, a coworker when I was working at the newspaper.
  • I really did wish you were there.
Love,
J.

Compartmenting Life

Sounds funny?  Well, this is my effort online, anyway... keep graphic design here, talk about fine art over there.  Market both, in their own ways, with their own blogs.

Quiet afternoon in the Studio

Right now and for the foreseeable, I will keep the clients I've already got for design work & printing.  I've been pretty busy since making the decision to pursue fine art, though.  I didn't really expect that too much, since there's no salesman, anymore.  This word of mouth thing is pretty good!

So, in addition to getting proofs ready for political campaign pushcards, calling on client doctors' offices and delivering envelopes to the college, I am making some time EACH DAY to paint.

Exciting ideas are hatching out!

I feel like I am on the edge of the precipice!!  I am really going with this art blogging FOR REAL!!

Here's what changed: my graphic design business is now a sole proprietorship!  This is a very good thing.  I've arranged the finances in such a way as I can do full time art.  Now, some of that may end up being graphic design for clients that need long, boring forms for their doctor's office, but the good news is I don't have to go out LOOKING for more of those!  I'll keep the clients I have and I don't have to beat the bushes to find more menus (or insert traditional typesetting job here) to make & print!

I still have a copier in my studio & some other necessary bindery equipment, but the paints and canvases are starting to compete for space!!  YAY!

More on this as it progresses.  I won't make promises.  But I can do this ONE THING.  Then, when I'm done with that I have a list of other ONE THINGS that can be done.

The business, of course, is Sunshine Graphics.  And the other place of business WILL BE Jancolors on Etsy.  The Etsy store is not stocked up, yet, but I have old rubber to put up and more planned!  Who knows, I might just get into that painting a day habit!  You just never know.

I want this!!

At last, here's a digital woodcut style

Thanks to the inspiration of Zina Sanders, I've done up my own woodcut in a similar style of Hepburn from her Quality Street photo.  There might be more like these types of illustrations coming.  This is not clipart, I painted it!

A little design for me to use

Snow days of February, reading, thinking and creating!  Yay!

Also, you can see this in the context of the web page, I maintain these pages, inheriting from another Dreamweaver user.  I may re-do this site, to make it my own, but it works for now.  I am busy trying to grow the membership & working on the social media... obviously!

I guess I need to make a Facebok button, too.
